Location: Edinburgh Airport, Scotland
Division: Drilline GPR Surveys

Ground Penetrating Radar Survey (GPR)

Job Information:

To Carry out a Ground penetrating Radar, Utility, Underground Structures and Features surveys to PAS128:2014 standards along the entire extents of the runway and four taxiways at Edinburgh Airport.

The purpose for supplying the survey is to provide full details of all underground utility services running throughout the worksite and supply depth below existing ground level of buried services and determine planar extents of potential sub surface structures including ducts and service trenches.

This will be added to a topographic survey and an underground utility survey being undertaken at the same time by one of our other geospatial divisions.

Challenges:

Working on a busy runway creates its own challenges in respect of vehicular movements and access egress. During stakeholder engagement Drilline proposed that works would have to be undertaken on a night shift basis to minimize public interface and disruption to incoming flights. The airport required additional involvement and permits to ensure safety and security was observed.

Data:

  • Works were completed within the specified timescales with our specialist GPR division “Drilline GPR Surveys” facilitating the GPR aspects of the project on behalf of the client including liaising with external stakeholders.
  • An IDS Georadar Stream UP system was used for a full coverage survey.
  • Over 3 night shifts the entire 2.7km runway, with taxiways Alpha through Delta, were covered.

Deliverables:

Fully layered and annotated 2D/3D AutoCAD DWG/
